2 c Granulated sugar
3 Eggs
1/2 c Buttermilk
1 ts Baking soda
Enough flour (approximately
-2 to 4 cups)
Flavor to taste with lemon;
-vanilla or spices

Blend butter and sugar until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating
after each. Add buttermilk, baking soda, flavoring and enough flour to form
a soft dough. Chill dough before rolling 1/4-inch thick and cut. Bake in
350 degree oven until slightly browned.

I realize this is a very vague recipe, but it is also a very old recipe.
Give it a try, you might be surprised at the results.
