1/2 c Hershey’s Cocoa 2 1/4 c All-Purpose Flour —
1/2 c Boiling Water Unsifted
2/3 c Shortening 1 1/2 ts Baking Soda
1 3/4 c Sugar 1/2 ts Salt
1 ts Vanilla 1 1/3 c Buttermilk Or Sour Milk*
2 Eggs

* To Sour Milk: Use 1 Tbs plus 1 tsp vinegar plus milk to equal 1 1/2
cups.

Grease and dust with flour two 9-inch cake pans. Make smooth paste of
cocoa and boiling water; cool slightly. Cream shortening, sugar and
vanilla in large mixer bowl; blend in eggs. Combine flour, baking
soda and salt; add alternately with buttermilk to creamed mixture.
Add cocoa paste to batter, blending well. Pour batter into pans. Bake
at 350 F for 35-40 mins or until a tester inserter in center comes
out clean. Frost as desired.
